Holy moly my heart! Today I found out that my absolute favorite online consignment site, The RealReal, has officially named the first Monday in October "National Consignment Day"! From my high school uniform days of trying to find unique shoes or a staple broach, to today trying to find that stunning vintage or consignment piece, one could say my relationship with lightly loved clothing is here to stay.
So thank you to The RealReal for starting this conversation, and for giving me the inspiration to write about a topic I've been wanting so much to share about! Through shopping on consignment or thrifting, it means you are finding either non-used or lightly loved items. So rather than purchasing the latest trend every season from fast fashion sources and overhauling the rest, it means you are keeping items' retails lives longer, even if their time in your closet has ended. When 75% of the world's 80 billion articles of clothing produced each year ends up in a landfill (according to Business Insider), that seems like reason enough for me.
Speaking of fast fashion, one of my favorite things to do is find a unique piece on consignment that you can style a couple of different ways. If there is one piece of advice I could pass along for a wardrobe, it is this: when you find yourself about to buy into the latest trend, see if you can opt for a fabulous consignment or vintage piece instead. It gives you your own unique style, and it's as simple as finding something that pops out to you! You'll know it when you see it, and the pride you have in finding your item is all the confidence you need to wear something all your own!
And if there is anything I've learned while interning in fashion, the extra detail and care that goes into creating luxury goods is made with quality and longevity in mind. So instead of thinking of your pre-owned items as used, realize that the precision that went into making them produces a high quality product that will have a phenomenal cost per wear. So yes, occasionally you may be paying more upfront, but I prefer to find a great deal on consignment or thrifting. You frequently are paying the same amount that you would to walk into some of our most frequented stores, but walk away with an item that has a story and will last just as long, if not longer!
So let's start sharing our closet finds! If you'd like to jump in, but navigating the consignment or thrift shopping world is a little intimidating, just send me a note! I love it, and I love helping friends get that perfect find too :). Below is a list of some of my favorite consignment and thrift stores to help get you started!
1. Online- The RealReal
The RealReal offers an expansive collection of luxury consignment, everywhere from art and engagement rings, Kate Spade bags to Chanel Flats, Dresses, sweaters, and even the Blue Hangisi Manolo Blahnik's as worn by Carrie Bradshaw. I've found my Oscar De La Renta flats for under $100 that have lasted me for years! I also recently won their Instagram contest to find my dream emerald dress from Rhode Resort (think Keira Knightly in Atonement) that I wore for our engagement photos, thank you The RealReal! What to find next....
2. In Boston- Revolve
Revolve is one of those places that sometimes I just can't believe it! Their collection of tops, dresses, jeans, and even work out clothing always has such a great variety, and amazing deals. My favorite part of the store is the sale section in the back that is frequently an additional 50-75% off. I've found Ferragmo for $12 and Chloe for under $40, and so much more. It's my favorite spot in the city to pop in and peruse, and I've made a great friend there too (Hi Laura!)
3. In Omaha- Scout Dry Goods
One of the places I miss most in Omaha is Scout Dry Goods! I've found many unique finds here, from dresses for banquets, to my floral painted Ralph Lauren jean shorts, or a vintage floor length poppy dress. Plus, you can grab a coffee at Blue Line in Dundee, and begin your perusing of their awesome selection, and I don't know what is better than a great coffee and great fashion. I've also sold my clothes here after a few closet clean outs myself!
4. On Instagram- Cheeky Vintage
This Houston 'haute' spot is a place I dream of going, and follow along with on Instagram! From their blogger followers and expert styling, to incredible 50's and 60's couture, they are one of my favorite accounts on Instagram. I can't wait to visit in person someday soon! When I was looking for a specific piece, they even worked with me via Instagram Messages, and were so kind and friendly to chat with. So if you live in Houston, get on over there! If not, give them a follow!
